Rhythm Unlocked: 5 Days to Fearless Musicality
Decode complex rhythms without needing fancy technique.
Gain the confidence to dance any music, any rhythm you hear no matter how complex it is, discover how to make your moves shine against the background of different rhythmic patterns, and become an outstanding dancer thanks to your confident, nuanced musicality – with the dance technique you already have.
Complex music doesn’t have to feel intimidating.
You’re a passionate dancer driven to become better every day. You take classes, practice hours upon hours, chasing better, more « advanced » technique; you attend workshop after workshop only to never even truly learn, much less perform the complex choreos you were taught.
But somehow, when it comes to dancing to rich, complex music – say, one of the classics, or a well-made mejancé – you’re stuck.
You keep trying to add fancier moves, either simply following the beat (and getting bored of it), or else trying to hit every single note and accent, ending up with an over-acrobatic choreo you’ll never enjoy performing.
Worst case, you give up and go back to your safe, easy pieces and never get to explore what’s arguably some of the best music there is.
Rhythm Unlocked
is a focused, 5-day online challenge designed to prove an important truth: you don’t need advanced technique to stand out as a dancer. What you need is to learn how to listen differently – and you’ll be instantly memorable thanks to your confident, nuanced musicality.
Over 5 days, we will take one simple movement combination and adapt it to five distinct iqa’at (rhythmic cycles) from simple to more complex, building on the the very foundation of Arabic music (according to Reda Henkesh and other great musicians): the iqa’.
Rhythm unlocked is for you if you:
- think « movement-first’ when dancing,
- believe the only way to do justice to complex music is with super advanced, complex technique,
- don’t know how to dance to complex rhythms, or
- freeze when a rhythm/iqa’ you can’t name comes up
You’ll learn
- how to think « music-first » and let the music guide your dance,
- how to adapt simple moves to complex music, without fancy technique,
- how to break down complex rhythms and adapt simple moves to them,
- how to find rhythmic structure on the spot, whether you know the name of the iqa’ in question.
In just 15 minutes a day, you will:
- dismantle the fear of « hard » rhythms by finding the structure within;
- discover how to make a simple combo shine against the background of different rhythmic patterns; and
- gain the confidence to dance any music you hear, regardless of your technical level or whether you know the name of the rhythm in question
– for only €15.

Programme
Each day, you’ll receive a short video with an explanation of the iqa’of the day, a demonstrarion of the combo or its adaptation, and a follow-along practice session.
Day 1: you’ll learn the basic combination, set to a Maqsoum rhythm. We’ll review the structure of Maqsoum, learn the combo, then practice on both a pure rhythm track and on a song.
Day 2: Malfouf – we’ll review the iqa’ Malfouf, and adapt our combo to it, and again, practice on a rhythm track and on an actual song extract. We’ll also discuss technical issues related to the faster tempo of this rhythm.
Day 3: Valse! After reviewing the rhythm, we’ll look into different ways to adapt moves we usually use for even meters (like the 4/4 of the Maqsoum or the 2/2 of the Malfouf) to an odd beat, in this case a 3/4.
Day 4: Building on what you learn in day 3, we’ll adapt our combo to the Samaii Taqil rhythm (10/4. You’ll also learn to quickly find structure in unknown or unusual rhythm structures fast, even if you can’t name them or research them at the moment.
Day 5: On the last day, we’re really diving deep into rhythms you rarely hear with Nawakht. Building on the previous days, we’ll adapt and practice our combo to this fascinating 7/4 rhythm – rarely used in classic Oriental, but as popular in the muwashah genre as its cousins are common in Turkish music. We’ll also touch on styling questions.
You’ll finish the course being able to break down, find structure in and adapt your dance on the spot to pretty much any rhythm Arabic music can throw at you. You’ll be able to confidently use the technique you already have to connect to pretty much any music, which will help you enjoy your own performance more, better connect to your audience, and ultimately become a dancer people remember.

What dancers say:

Hi, I’m Eszter-Maura.

I’m a Raqs Sharqi / belly dancer with over 25 years of experience and more than a decade of musical training mostly in Western classical but also in Middle-Eastern Music.
I believe that dance is and should be “music made visible”, and that musicality, especially a solid sense of rhythm is the most important skillset a dancer can have.
I’m here to help you develop your musicality so that you can rely on your music to support you as a solid foundation for your dance, establish a cultural connection by embodying the music, reduce your stage fright – and grow into a confident, expressive artist who owns the stage.
